As the June policy meeting approaches, European Central Bank (ECB) officials are issuing cautious signals about inflation and future policy direction. Governing Council member Jose Luis Escriva recently noted that while the decline in energy and raw material prices helps curb inflation in the short term, the euro's appreciation and uncertainty in U.S. tariff policies make the outlook harder to predict.
When discussing inflation trends, Escriva pointed out that the current euro and energy prices are exerting downward pressure on consumer prices, and the unusual depreciation of the dollar further complicates matters. "In the short term, the dollar's depreciation and the euro's appreciation aren't typical reactions in this economic context, which even took us by surprise," he said.
Analyzing the upcoming new round of inflation forecasts, he emphasized that the ECB is reassessing the impact of various variables, particularly the volatile energy and commodity prices. He stated, "We have already seen a general decline in energy and raw material prices, which will exert downward pressure on inflation in the short term."
It is reported that the ECB will hold a new round of policy meetings on June 5, where the latest economic and inflation forecasts will be released. The market widely expects the bank to cut the benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points, which is almost a foregone conclusion, marking the eighth cut in the current rate reduction cycle. However, Escriva and other officials also hinted that there might still be room for more cuts, depending on feedback from economic data.
Despite this, the central bank remains highly vigilant about the inflation path. Escriva noted that U.S. President Trump's escalating trade policies are a major uncertainty for current policy-making. "The impact we are seeing in terms of tariffs is increasingly difficult to measure, and its effect will depend on whether Europe chooses to counteract," he stated.
To address these uncertainties, the ECB is developing an analytical framework that includes multiple hypothetical scenarios to better assess policy outcomes. "We are no longer relying on a single baseline scenario but are considering multiple possible evolution paths in parallel," Escriva added.
Overall, although the ECB has clearly signaled a move towards easing, its policy-making will remain cautious amid the intertwining of global political and monetary variables, especially with inflation yet to show a sustained upward trend. The June meeting will not only be a focal point for market attention but will also test the central bank's ability to regulate in an uncertain environment.
